Yangon

The capital city of Myanmar and is the gateway of Myanmar. It is evergreen and cool with lush tropical trees, shady parks and beautiful lakes. It is attractive in its own special way. It covers about 350 sq.km and has a population of over five millions.

The Shwedagon Pagoda is the world famous golden stupa, which is the prominent landmark visible from miles around. One of the wonders of the world, is believed to have been built approximately 2500 years ago.

National museum exhibits the lion throne of the last Myanmar King, Royal Regalia of 19 century, artifacts of various ancient periods, musical instruments and paintings.

 

Reclining Buddha (70 metres long) is one of the largest images in Myanmar can be seen in Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda.

Myanmar is also famous for its Ruby, Jade, Sapphire and Pearl. In Myanmar Gems museum you can see 496.5 carats Nawata Ruby, about 33 tons largest Jadeite Boulder, 11877 grams largest Sapphire and 9.8 mommes largest Pearl.

Environs

Syrian ( Tanyin )

It is about 20 km from Yangon. It was under the Portuguese in the 17th century. Some ruined and old Portuguese building can still be seen in Tanyin. It is famous among locals for Kyaikhauk Pagoda and Yele Pagoda ( a pagoda on a small island ) at Kyauktan. 

Twante

It is 24 km from Yangon by boat. You can also access there by crossing the Yangon ( Hlaing ) River and take a bus or rent a car. It is well known for its pottery,fruits and vegetables.

Mandalay

The last Capital of the Myanmar Kingdom is in the central Myanmar, 688 km due north of Yangon. It is the largest city after Yangon. Being rich in monasteries, pagodas and ample resources of Myanmar arts and architecture, Mandalay is known as the centre of Myanmar culture.

Mandalay Palace, Hill, Shwenandaw Monastry, Kuthodaw Pagoda and Mahamuni Pagoda are worth visiting in Mandalay.

 

Environs

Amarapura

An ancient capital of the Konbaung Dynasty is about 11 km south of Mandalay. U Bein Bridge (1208 metre) was built by Mayor U Bein with teak planks two centuries ago. It is also famous for cotton and silk weaving industries.

 
 
 
IN-WA

It was a historical capital in 1364 and known as AVA. Me Nu Ok Kyaung and Bagara Kyaung are attractive to tourists.

 

 

 

Bagan

It is about 12 hours drive from Yangon. It is one of the richest archaeological sites with four million pagodas in Asia. It is situated on the eastern bank of Ayeyarwady River and about 193 km from Mandalay. There are some River cruises between Mandalay and Bagan. The best scenic views can be seen in the morning and at the sun set.

Highlights are Archaeological Museum, Ananda Temple, Bupaya Pagoda, Gubyaukgyi Temple, Shwegugyi Temple, Shwezigon Pagoda and Thatbinnyu Temple. Famous lacquerware industry can be seen and can buy the lacquerware there.

Mount Popa

It is an extinct volcano and about 67-km from Bagan. It is about 1,500 metres in height. Popa Taung Kalat is famous among locals. There is an annual festival of Nats and spirit Gods during May and June. Tourists who interest in ecotourism interest Popa Mountain Park and Resort.

 

 

Beaches

Ngapali Beach

It is the most beautiful beach of Myanmar. It has 3 km long white sandy and unspoiled beach. The blue sky makes the most beautiful and picturesque beach. Although it is only about 400 km from Yangon, going by car takes about 14 hours due to the roads condition.

 

 
Ngwe Saung Beach

Newly developed beach near Bassein, the capital of Ayeyarwaddy Division. It is about 6 hours drive from Yangon and have to cross Nga Win River by landing craft. The 15 km long white sandy beach is an alternative to Ngapali beach where not easily accessible by the locals.

Chaung Tha Beach

It is about 48 km from Bassein. It is the most popular beach for locals due to cheaper accommodation and food. Seafood and Local products are sold in the market.

 

 

 

Bago

An ancient capital of the Mon Kingdom (15th century) is situated only 80 km from Yangon.

The grand palace of King Bayintnaung is being constructed. Two merchants Taphussa and Bhalika built the Shwemawdaw Pagoda in over 2000 years ago. There is also a Reclining Buddha (55 metres) long called Shwethalyaung. 

The newly developed Tourist site near Bago is Moyingyi Wildlife Sanctuary (Bird Watching). Some dominant bird species are little Grebe, Large Cormorant, Lesser Whistling Duck, Purple Waterhen, Open Bill Stork, Glossy Ibis, Spot-Billed Pelican and sarus crane. The migration period is from October to March.

Inle Lake

It is about 38 km from Taunggyi. A vast beautiful and picturesque lake, sheltered among the hazy blue mountains of 1524 metres, stretches 22.4 km long and 10.2 km wide. It is famous for Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, its unique leg rower, floating villages and farms and colourful market.

 

 

Kalaw

It is about 70 km from Taunggyi. It was a popular hill station during British administration. It is 1320 m above sea level and it is a good place for trekking. Most of the tourists enjoy hiking there due to cool weather and pleasant environment.

Kyaikhtiyo

It is known as Golden Rock Pagoda by most tourists due to the golden stupa stands on a gold gilded boulder. It is located about 160 km from Yangon and over 1100 m above sea level. It is one of the wonders in Myanmar due to balancing action of the huge boulder, about 18 ft tall and about 50 ft in girth. There was a recorded documentary film in which you can see the movement of the huge boulder by pushing it.

 

 

Mingun

It is famous for the world largest ringing Bell. It weights about 90 tons. It is situated 11 km from Mandalay on the West Bank of the Ayeyarwady River.

Mogok

It is about 206 km from Mandalay, and situated 1170 m above sea level. It is famous for its mines of famous Rubies, Sapphires, Garnets, Spaniel, Emerald and Topaz. Needed to book in advance to visit there and only package tours are allowed.

Mrauk U

It is one of the archaeological sites in Myanmar. It was the ancient city of Rakhine Kingdom in the 15th century. It is 80 km away from Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine State. 

Mrauk U is famous for massive Shitthaung Pagoda with countless Buddha images and Archaeological Museum. Many old temples with wall paintings of Indian cultural influence can be seen.

 

Pindaya

It is about 40 km from Kalaw and 1164 m above sea level. It is famous for its limestone caves and Shwe U Min Pagoda where over 8000 of Buddha images can be seen on the wall of the caves. The picturesque Botaloke Lake makes perfect the view of Pindaya. There are Trekking trips around Pindaya to see hill tribes.

Pyay

It is located 285 km north of Yangon, on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwady River. It is famous for the Shwe Sandaw Pagoda and an archaeological site of ancient Pyu capital Thayekhittaya (5th to 9th century).

Pyin Oo Lwin (Maymyo)

It is located 69 km from Mandalay and over 1,600 metres in elevation. It was once a British holiday resort town due to cool and pleasant weather. Many Colonial-style houses with large compound and pine trees can be seen there. You can still see the pony wagons, which are still used as local transportation and the unique style of Pyin Oo Lwin.

 

 

Sagaing

It is 21 km from Mandalay and situated on the West Bank of Ayeyarwady River. Sagaing Hills are known as a religious retreat where over 500 monasteries are located. Kaunghmudaw and Soon U Ponnya Shin Pagoda are main attractions to tourists. Modern Buddhist University and hospital are also located in Sagaing hill. Ywahtaung village is famous for Silversmiths.

 

 

Taungoo

Taungoo is about 280 km away from Yangon and it is a midway point between Yangon and Mandalay. Most of the Tourists travelling by car use as night stop. Although Taungoo was once the ancient city between 15th and 16th century, the historic remains are hardly seen nowadays.

Environs

Pho Kyar Resort

Another newly developed site is Pho Kyar Resort which is one of the forestry base camps near Thar Ga Ya. There are elephants show and elephants ride in the forest. Please check the prices before you go.

Than Daung Resort

It is a Hill Resort near Taungoo. It is located 45 km from Taungoo and about 1200 metres above sea - level. It is famous for tea plantation and there was a tea factory during British Administrations.

Sein Ye Resort

There is a Sein Ye Forest camp near Taungoo for adventurer. You can see elephants at their work and ride elephants in the forest.

 

 

 

Taunggyi

It is the capital city of Shan State, situated over 1400 metres about sea level. It is a summer resort for the local due to cool and beautiful scenery.

Environs

Kukku Pagoda

It is about 42 km from Taunggyi. It was off limit to tourists few years ago. About two thousand and five hundred Zedis can be seen in Kukku. These ancient pagodas are different styles from Bagan pagodas.
